31.University of California, Los Angeles ;USA

University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)

A Brief History of UCLA

University of California, Los Angeles With only 11,000 inhabitants in 1880, the pueblo of Los Angeles convinced the state government to establish a State Normal School in Southern California. Enthusiastic citizens contributed between $2 and $500 to purchase a site, and on August 29, 1882, the Los Angeles Branch of the State Normal School welcomed its first students in a Victorian building that had been erected on the site of an orange grove.By 1914 Los Angeles had grown to a city of 350,000, and the school moved to new quartersa Hollywood ranch off a dirt road that later became Vermont Avenue. In 1919, the school became the Southern Branch of the University of California and offered two years of instruction in Letters and Science. Third- and fourth-year courses were soon added; the first class of 300 students was graduated in 1925, and by 1927 the Southern Branch had earned its new name: University of California at Los Angeles. (The name was changed again in 1958 to University of California, Los Angeles.)Continued growth mandated the selection of a site that could support a larger campus, and in 1927, ground was broken in the chaparral-covered hills of Westwood. The four original buildingsRoyce Hall, Powell Library, Haines Hall, and Kinsey Hallformed a lonesome cluster in the middle of 400 empty acres. The campus hosted some 5,500 students its first term in 1929. The Regents established the masters degree at UCLA in 1933 and, three years later, the doctorate. UCLA was fast becoming a full-fledged university offering advanced study in almost every field. The most spectacular growth at UCLA occurred in the 25 years following World War II, when it tripled its prewar enrollment of 9,000 students and undertook what would become a $260 million building program that included residence halls, parking structures, laboratories, more classrooms, service buildings, athletic and recreational facilities, and a 715-bed teaching hospital that is now one of the largest and most highly respected in the world.

23.Johns Hopkins University,USA

Johns Hopkins University

A Brief History Of Jhu The Johns Hopkins University opened Feb. 22, 1876, with the inauguration of its first president, Daniel Coit Gilman. "What are we aiming at?" Gilman asked in his installation address. "The encouragement of research ... and the advancement of individual scholars, who by their excellence will advance the sciences they pursue, and the society where they dwell."
Building from scratch, rather than taking over an existing institution, freed Gilman to create something entirely new, at least in the United States. He established a research university, dedicated not just to advancing students' knowledge but also to advancing the state of human knowledge generally, through research and scholarship.
Gilman dismissed the notion that teaching and research are separate endeavors; he believed that success in one depended on success in the other. "The best teachers are usually those who are free, competent and willing to make original researches in the library and the laboratory," Gilman said. "The best investigators are usually those who have also the responsibilities of instruction, gaining thus the incitement of colleagues, the encouragement of pupils, the observation of the public." The realization of Gilman's philosophy at Hopkins, and at other institutions that later attracted Hopkins-trained scholars, revolutionized higher education in America, leading to the research university system as it exists today.
Hopkins remains a leader, in both teaching and research. The School of Medicine is one of the best anywhere, and the Bloomberg School of Public Health is renowned for contributions worldwide to preventive medicine and the health of large populations. The other divisions, though smaller -- by design -- than similar schools in other institutions, include eminent scholars and numerous highly ranked departments.
In recent years, Johns Hopkins has won more federal research and development funding than any other university. This is due in large measure to the work of the Applied Physics Laboratory, a division of the university devoted entirely to research and development. The School of Medicine, however, is the largest recipient of National Institutes of Health research grants to medical schools. The Bloomberg School of Public Health, the first of its kind in this country, ranks first among public health schools in federal research support.
In all, the university has nine academic divisions. The Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, the G.W.C Whiting School of Engineering, and the School of Education are based at the Homewood campus in northern Baltimore. The Carey Business School has headquarters downtown and the schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing are in east Baltimore, sharing a campus with The Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Peabody Institute, founded in 1857 and a leading professional school of music, has been affiliated with Johns Hopkins since 1977. It is located on Mount Vernon Place in downtown Baltimore. The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, founded in 1943, has been a Johns Hopkins division since 1950. It is located in Washington, D.C.
The Applied Physics Laboratory is a division of the university co-equal to the nine schools, but with a non-academic mission. APL, located between Baltimore and Washington, is noted for contributions to national security, space exploration and other civilian research and development. It has developed more than 100 biomedical devices, many in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.
Johns Hopkins also has a campus near Rockville in Montgomery County, Md., and has academic facilities in Nanjing, China, and in Bologna and Florence, Italy. It maintains a network of continuing education facilities hroughout the Baltimore-Washington area, including centers in downtown Baltimore, in downtown Washington and in Columbia.

Mission Statement

The mission of The Johns Hopkins University is to educate its students and cultivate their capacity for life-long learning, to foster independent and original research, and to bring the benefits of discovery to the world.

20.University of Tokyo;Japan

University of Tokyo

The University of Tokyo was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. As a leading research university, the University of Tokyo offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research across the full spectrum of academic activity. The university aims to provide its students with a rich and varied academic environment that ensures opportunities for both intellectual development and the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills. The University of Tokyo has a faculty of over 4,000 and a total enrollment of about 29,000, evenly divided between undergraduate and graduate students. As of 2006 there were 2,269 international students, and over 2,700 foreign researchers come annually to the university for both short and extended visits. The University of Tokyo is known for the excellence of its faculty and students and ever since its foundation many of its graduates have gone on to become leaders in government, business, and the academic world.

With the aim of becoming the “World’s Tokyo University,” we are striving to create an institution that contributes to the benefit of all human society. As the twenty-first century moves forward, the pace of change accelerates, and conflicts between technology and society, humankind and the environment, and among cultures are becoming increasingly evident. At the same time, the age of nations is coming to an end, and global competition has inspired a growing awareness of the need for a collective human society. In this era of rapid change, the University of Tokyo intends to contribute to that international goal by reviving the importance of “knowledge.”Essentially, knowledge frees human beings. It is a profound source of power that encourages candid human interaction and provides people with vigor as well as liberating them from various limitations. The creation and application of new forms of knowledge will no doubt determine the future direction of human society. Human society has developed by producing a wide variety of knowledge over its long history. However, the professionalization and segmentation of knowledge that has taken place over more than a century has obscured its true value. This university, the place where knowledge is traditionally accumulated, declares its intention to open itself up to society and serve as a site for fresh creative exchanges and developments. It is the mission of the University of Tokyo to present to the world a new model for a university that re-establishes faith in knowledge. It is necessary to transform the university into a vigorous center for the free-flow of intellectual energy. To create such an intellectually dynamic institution, the university will concentrate on maintaining an efficient core, ensuring a just distribution of power, and establishing a flexible interface. The three key words here are “Autonomy/Distribution/Cooperation.”At every organisational level, we are tirelessly reassessing current conditions and making reforms where necessary. It is possible to achieve our mission only if the institution constantly strives to develop and enhance new ways of thinking. Following the example of outstanding institutions both inside and outside Japan, it is hoped that every individual at the University of Tokyo will be able to pursue the truly rewarding life of the mind that such an institution ought to provide. This vibrant intellectual milieu will benefit every member of the University of Tokyo, who can then expect to be involved in the world’s leading creative projects. Let us put into practice the bold claim that we offer the “best education and research in the world.” Our mission is to educate the next generation of talent that shares in our collective ideal to remain sensitive to others while courageously taking the lead. The University of Tokyo will both promote excellent research and encourage the integration of the latest expertise in all fields. The university will then become a crossroads where academic achievement and social issues meet, and where the models, industries, and academic fields of the future can confidently be developed. As I assume the presidency of the University of Tokyo, I would like to exhort all members of the university to make every effort to meet the exciting challenge of reviving the importance of knowledge.

A Student Exchange Programme provides students with the opportunity to spend a semester or two at more than 200 overseas partner universities for exposure to different education systems, ways of life and cultures.
Other partnerships to raise the level of its teaching and research programmes include the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy with Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government; Singapore-MIT Alliance with Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music with Johns Hopkins’ Peabody Institute; The Logistics Institute-Asia Pacific with Georgia Institute of Technology; German Institute of Science & Technology with Technische Universitat Munchen; and Temasek Defence Systems Institute with US Naval Postgraduate School. The NUS experience is complemented by a rich residential life and abundant opportunities for artistic, cultural and sporting pursuits.

Having crossed its Centennial in 2005 to mark 100 years of distinguished heritage and achievements, NUS is constantly re-shaping itself to meet the higher education needs of tomorrow.
